WiFi in Spain

A friend has a Dell Vostro 1720 laptop running Windows 7 Professional.

When he uses it in a hotel in the UK, he can connect to the hotel's WiFi
system perfectly OK. He's used several hotels in the UK.

However, when he goes to Spain, and tries to use it in a bar, although
the laptop shows the bar's Wifi SSID, when he asks to connect it does
not ask for the security key, it simply fails. He hasn't been in many
bars in Spain, but the few he's used in the Mijas area all fail the same
way. He's been able to connect to the bar's router using an ethernet
    cable quite OK.

Any ideas? Is there something different about WiFi systems in Spain?

Or is it simply that Spanish WiFi systems are old and not compatible
    with Windows 7 ???

    Hi Graham
Did you ever get an answer to this problem? I have a similar problem, I live in southern Spain and have had no problems connecting with the wifi at home with my Spanish bought Compaq netbook but with an Acer Aspire laptop I got in the UK recently and brought over here the connection is very iffy, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't although it always shows it's receiving a strong signal.
    Thanks
    Mike
