What quadcore CPU, and what mobo?

    Going to be rebuilding soon.
Going to be new mobo, CPU and cooler, graphics card and ram.
Probably looking at 2gig of ram to start with but I want room to expand
    if I need it.

My current PC is 1.3 Duron, and the last machine I built was a 3200 AMD
64 single core. I realise I'm going to have to go back to toasty old
Intel to get the current best performance.

With a single PCI-E card and a quad core processor plus my current 4 IDE
drives and one usb-IDE drive, is my current Tagen 450watt PSU going to
take it power wise? It already has the necessary connectors.

Also, ATI/AMD or NVIDIA for the graphics card?

I want this one to last as well as the old one has (about 3-4 years) and
    still be useable for something.

  2. My current, for general Home use, system is a Dual Core 6600 at 3.2 Ghz & a
Geforce 8800GTX ..3 Gig Dual DDR2 Mem. ..WIN XP ...350 Gig's (or more) HD
    ....

Every now & then I get out my old 'last but one' Pentium II 500 Mhz
....Radeon 9000 ..196 MB Mem ..6 Gig HD
Almost one twelfth the specs in nearly every respect .
& like you find it does all I need ..with WIN 98. Seems to start up & 'feel'
much the same as the new heap...plays DVD films ...online Browsing &
    Internet Radio...MP3's ..
UNTIL I want to play (as I often do) a modern game ..
That really is the only reason I got it .. I can't stand those Xbox
    Playstation things.

Before the Duron, I did have a BP6 with dual Celeron 366's overclocked
to 425, with the same GF2MX graphics card that I'm using now. Hence why
a new graphics card will be needed.

Duron 1.3 is faster at individual jobs like games, but with games of the
era such as UT, Quake 3 Arena etc, I could play a game and have a
download running and burn a CD or rip a disc with now slowdown.

I miss being able to do that. I guess dual/Quad core or SMP is where I
    need to be again.

That is my problem, I used to keep up with hardware changes, then got
bored. Now I've realised all these great new games either won't run at
all, or I've got the detail turned down so low to get it to play I might
as well try Doom on a 486 again.

And yes, I don't want a console either.
