Vista computer. Browsers do not pull up sites, applications will not connect to update, yet can ping sites.

I can ping the router, and websites with no problem. However applications will not connect to update, and internet explorer and firefox will not display pages, say they cannot connect. Obviously i can ping sites, I dont have to say the network connections appear to be fine. Using a wireless card to connect to the router. (using verizon fios)

Sounds like a virus has hijacked your browser. Boot in safe mode and run an antivirus scan.

It looks like it could be some kind of Hijack. When pinging are you using IP address or domain names? ie ping 123.123.123.123 or ping www.somesite.com?

If you can ping IP addresses but not website it looks like a DNS related problem.
