i just downloaded a .avi video file and it will not run in any version of windows media player or quicktime. No downloads are available for either program that would enable decompression of video.

it was encoded on 12/9/01 buy "binarydreams"!!!???

    solutions?

what? encoded by binarydreams? must be from somewhere else... please explain what you mean.

Is the file a video, or a song..?

Yes the binary dreams thing is just a wierd coiencidence i guess.

anyways... this .avi video file will not decompress in any media player that i have tried. the sound track plays but the picture is absent. when i try to download an update for quicktime/Windows MEdia player etc. i find there is no such plugin for this compression format.

i have updated all my video software and everything and even tried to jimmy it with Bink and Smacker but even that couldn't open it.

oh, yes the file is not corrupted btw.

i have tried using different versions of WMP and i am now using v7.1

I just downloaded another .avi video file and had the same problem so i suspect i have some kind of problem with my computer.

I downloaded both files from a p2p file sharing service (KaZaa), and no they are not naughty :D just episodes of sealab 2021 and southpark.

both files were available from multiple sources so someone must be able to make it work.

sorry it took so long to reply.

I have had this happen on kazaa/naptser. sometimes when you d/l from muiltiple sources either the sound or vid dosnt work. If I could look at one of the files, I could see what I can do.

chances are that AVI is compressed with Divx, go to www.divx.com to download there free version of that CODEC

MS usually doesn't allow you to download that codec from there updates.

once you get this codec you should be able to play the avi file in

    Cheers, problem solved!

Thanks for your help James and XavierXYZ.

Downloading the divx CODEC totally resolved the problem.
Thanks for your time and thoughts on this matter.

For those with issues with video playback... If you've downloaded the video clip from the Internet and have trouble playing it, it is more often than not because the file is either corrupt, or you don't have the necessary codec for the playback.

I highly recommend visiting digital-digest.com or similar sites and getting your hands on various codec packs, like Nimo or Typhoon. These packs contain the most common codecs, which Windows Media Player most definitely won't automatically download.
