Speccing up a new workstation - Dell Precision opinions?

  1. Appreciate it's a little OT as it's not a DIY job, but I guess I just want
some opinions on speccing up a new admin workstation ("admin" as in I'm a
network admin and it'll be my daily workhorse).

I suspect anything modern will do the job, the most CPU/RAM intensive stuff
is running various hotfix checkers against x00 domain LAN machines, the
sofware we'll probably be using likes as much resource as is possible.
Other than that it'll be the standard tools that network admins use,
    Exchange, AD tools, Hyena etc..

This will NOT be used for games, so I don't see graphics being a huge
issue, it should be capable of lasting three years without seeming terribly
slow.. or as much as that is possible without spending a _huge_ premium for
    the current fastest CPUs.

Main thing is it has to be a Dell because that's what we buy :)

I have the pick of the www.dell.co.uk website, usually we use the Small
Business section as for some reason the deals can often be better value.

I've got my eye on a Precision Workstation 450 - it's in the Workstation
section as WS005 promo, looks good with the 18" FP at no extra cost?

    TIA for any opinions.

  2. Quite scary actually.. the "users" want a new desktop and I assume any old
model from the current Optiplex line will be more than up to the job, but
as soon as it's for me it's another story :)
