can I just buy a cheap cpu and use it for a music library and file storing for the family?.I currently use a laptop with a few ipods and such but dont want to clutter this laptop with things i can store somewhere else. The setup I have is a netgear router with all my devices(all wireless right now).I will prob get a monitor for the cpu at a later date and use it for trouble shooting(network) and listening to music as well.

Yeah, you don't need anything very powerful to run a file server.

You could even get a cheap NAS device to store your files on and hide it somewhere in the house.
