The other day I was sending out a group text message for an invitation
to our Super Bowl party and lamented the fact that you can't create
groups. Notwithstanding that, I started selecting recipients by typing
a, b, c... and selecting the names that popped up. I noticed names
that are not in my Contacts list anymore appearing in the drop down
list for selection. How do I permanently delete these names from my
phone? I don't want them anymore.

Well then, you lose the bet. Because that is happening despite what
    you think.

The only explanation I can provide is that this phone has a Microsoft
Exchange account on it and the phone contacts and Exchange contacts
intermingle. Still, those deleted contacts are neither on my iPhone
contact list nor Outlook contact list anymore yet they show up on the
    To field of Messages.

These are "Previous Recipients." To delete any or all, from within the
Mail program, hit Window then Previous Recipients. Select and then
    delete away...

  5. Does iOS have something like Mac OS X's "Previous Recipients"?

  6. he was telling you how to do it on the Macintosh; he forgot that that
    this is an iPhone newsgroup.

None of those contacts are from my Exchange account. They were all
personal ones imported from my old phone before I had an iPhone.

The point I'm trying to get across is these phantom contacts are ONLY
under (text) Messages. They do not appear when using Mail. However
the above link was helpful in that it directed me to click the i sign
next to the name and then Remove From Recents.

    Thank you.

    Maybe "Contacts Duster" would help.
