What are the chances of anyone who downloads a few songs and movies getting
busted for copyright infringement using P2P and or Bittorrent clients in
    this country?

What is the best method of protection apart from not downloading ofcourse?

BT is still legal in Australia, right?
Unfortunately, there are some file format which is illegal to share or download,
    such as .mp3

    Am i correct?

There's always some risk, but given that our legal system is nothing
like the US legal system, its tiny if you arent doing it commercially.
Get someone else to download it and send it to you on DVD etc.

Never has been to move copyrighted material.
It isnt the format that makes it illegal.

I was also concerned about receiving attention from angry record companies
for my P2P and bittorrent activities, until I realised there is a much
greater chance of getting killed in a car accident :)

I love that thought. It is just what a Zebra thinks before
it is eaten by a Lion in Africa ;-)

Seriously now if you read newspapers just look at the
trouble someone like Sony goes to just bust a huge pirating
syndicate operating from markets. It is more like safety in
    anonymity and scale.

I don't download much at all really compared to some.
    I think I'll take my chances ]-)

Take your chances if you feel like taking such great chances are needed BUT
spoof your IP or end up paying for it. Depending on how much you download,
you MAY be gotten some time this year but my personal bet is that it wont
happen THIS year but some time in the next year or two. However, if you only
download 1 thing a quarter you are unlikely ever to be gotten.
