    Sorry for being OT here.

    Got a problem with a customer's BJC 4300, a printer I am totally
    unfamiliar with.

Cable is fine, power is fine.

Switch on, printer makes a beep and leaves the green light flashing.
Resume button hs no effect. Ink carriage is "parked" in the centre
    rather than to the right.

Press the "cartridge" button and it just beeps twice and sits there.

Replace the ink unit with the scanner unit, printer instantly parks
the head correctly, green light stops flashing and it sits there
    waiting to go.

Customer has no replacement cartridges and doesn't want to buy any in
    case the printer is dead!

Is this just out of ink, or is the print head knackered? Or is it
    something else?

As far as I can recall (it's a long time since I used mine) this printer
has no means of reporting ink levels. That leaves either the head or the
printer. Since it appears to accept the scanner head, I would assume
the printer is OK, and the contacts in the head carriage assembly.

Two things to try - firstly, does the customer have the second print
head. IIRC, these were often supplied with two heads, one black only and
one black & colour. If so, can you try the second head? Failing that,
try "gently" cleaning the contacts on the side of the head.

If all that fails, I'd guess the head is knackered. This leaves two
options for testing - either get a black only head or a colour one.
Looking at the only site I have bookmarked, www.7dayshop.com the prices
are as follows; BC20 Black only £17-90, BC21E Colour £28.90. Both
include the ink, and the BC21E has replacable ink tanks thereafter.
Actually they are pretty easy to refill.
Prices locally are likely to be a bit more than those if the customer
can't wait for delivery from 7dayshop (usually around 10 days if they
    have stock)

  4. Mine always does that, you can try install a cartridge (which it accepts) -
turning the printer off, then forcing the print holder to the middle where
you can change the cartridge - Then push it back to the right hand side. It
works for me,.I'm not too sure you'd want your customer to try that tho ;o)
