I want to get a new cable modem for Optus. Optus are telling me that they
    can only handle one type.

    Netgear CG3000 Version 2

    Is that true?

    According to this here,

    http://www.optus.com.au/shop/broadband/Offers-&-Extras/Approved-Equipment-List

I can purchase a few others

    Motorola
    SB4100, SB4101, SB4200, SB5100, SB5101
    Netgear
    CG814WG, CVG824G, CG3000
    CISCO
    EMTA2203, DPQ3212, DPQ3925

If so what do you recommend? Why am I restricted?

  2. Very likely that model Netgear is the only modem Optus have for sale -
you'll have to source different brands/models yourself.

I can't offer any recommendations as I only had a brief stint with Optus
cable back before Singtel bought them out, and at that time the Motorola was
    the only modem available.

One thing I can suggest though is not to rely on the modem's internal
router; it'll be as leaky as a politician's calculations. Get a secondary
router to protect your network - even the cheapest will do a better job.

Netgear stuff are usually cheaper. Optarse must be getting them in bulk for
    peanuts.
I still got couple of them in somewhere in my backyard hut. I'm not sure why
    I'm keeping them.
    Motorola SB4100 rings a bell.
Wondering whether it's an old cable modem, that happened to be still around.
    Not likely, I guess.
