I helped my girlfriends friend a while ago since her computer randomly locked up, the only thing wrong was the cpu fan looking like that (it was solid dust though, like a cookie)

Yeah. The tower was by her feet on the floor and the dogs often sleep there, so it's been sucking up dog hair like nobody's business. I cleaned it up and put it on top of the desk this time around... I am amazed that the temperatures never got high enough for it lock up, but it probably was a fire hazard waiting to happen.

It's amazing just how much crap ends up inside electronic equipment especially if it is positioned on carpet.

Just think of your PC as an automatic vacuum cleaner - collecting all the dust in your room ;)

I should put one in every room and sell the vacuum cleaner.

I don't remember why exactly it is that way, but my wife's PC doesn't have automatic adjustment of the case fan... It just blows at max speed whenever the thing is on. Sounds like a jet engine, but you get used to it.

One of my fans used to be like that. Then I found out that some of the plugs control the speed, and some don't. Are there any other plugs for a fan on the motherboard, that might control the speed?
