NovaBackup: Elapsed Time For 500 Gigs?

Discussion in 'Backup Software' started by (PeteCresswell), Jan 28, 2014.

  1. Yesterday I bought NovaBackup 15 and kicked off a full backup against my
NAS box - a little less than 500 gigs.

Today it is still running after almost 13 hours and looks to be about
    80% complete.

"Current Speed" is about 17 MB per second.

I can't say how long the same backup took with SecondCopy, but I'd bet
the mortgage money that it wasn't anywhere near 12 hours.

The Question: Does 12+ hours sound like it's in the ballpark? Or do
I need to look for some bottleneck in the process.

Good catch.... I never even considered the diff.

But the answer is that I don't know. NovaBackup's UI is so
confusing/disorganized that I can't even figure out how to control it
    the way I want.

I think I'm going to cut my losses with NovaBackup and move on to
something with a UI that I can understand.

    Anybody got a suggestion?

    Musts:
    - Database-based, not file-copy like SecondCopy or XCOPY.

    - Decent UI. Yeah, a judgment call.... but if I give a name
to a backup routine, at least show the name in the various
    lists....

    - Individual files listed by backup time on the Restore dialog.
i.e. If file Wiz.bin has been backed up twelve times, I want
to see a list of Wiz.bins with twelve entries and dates so
I can pick the one I want. This is different from having
to bring up a list of each and every incremental backup to
see if Wiz.bin is in it.

    - Ability to reach out over a LAN and back up files from
    a NAS box.

    - Ability to specify destination when restoring
    a file from backup.

    Wants:
    - Reasonable price
    - Decent performance (not a "Must" because it can run
in the wee hours of the morning)
    - eMail notifications

  3. Per Patrick:
For me, speed is a nice-to-have, but not a Must because I can schedule
the backups for the wee hours in the morning.

I's surprised that *anybody* likes Nova. The paradigm is just too
poorly done. For starters, if I define a backup job it needs to have a
name so I can identify it in the various lists (Schedule, for instance).
Nova allows the name, but doesn't show it in any lists. Go figure...
