That's a good point! I'll work on this now :)

Yeah, it's a shame that vB 3.8 is EOL, as I really don't like vB 4.x. For the forseeable future, vB 3.8 will still be supported with security updates - so there's no need to make the switch for quite some time. :)

The forum software works well, so I don't want to change it quite yet :D. I do like XenForo (got 1 license for it), but vB works well for THQ.

Sure, I've got no problems with a re-organisation - are other people happy about the suggested new forum layout, or are there any tweaks? Out of interest, which section would you suggest the old operating systems sections go in to? Also, at the moment we're positioned THQ as a tech support site, but we'll end up having more non-tech sections with the suggested layout - is that done to make a shift towards being more of a hang-out forum?

How about a 'Legacy Systems' section to cover questions or issues regarding Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000

Maybe even XP could go in there now?

So far no one had opposed to the new layout. I was thinking throwing the OS under software (in the end that's what an OS is) but if you think keeping the OS section would be better then by all means...I don't think it would hurt to see it go or see it stay.

And I did intentionally put more "hang out" forums in my suggestion than computer tech forums. Like I have said before, we need other stuff to keep people hanging out here so that they will post computer problems when they arise.

Honestly, and I hate to be this way, but THQ is obsolete for anyone that frequents forums. We are focused on tech support, which is what we do for fun. Which is why our few regulars are all IT guys. I know we are not supposed to link to other forums, so I will edit these out after a couple of days but I think it makes my point.

    How about motorcycles?

Want to know what these have in common? The people that post and hang out there, also have a place to ask for computer help. They have no need to come here and ask for help. About 90% of the forums out there have the same thing. I could keep going all day.

We need to decide if we want to just hang out and BS around and answer IT problems for folks when they arise, or if we want to continue to focus on purely tech support. if we do that, then the only people we could hope to gain as far as members are other IT guys. Anyone that has worked in that field knows that if you don't pet their ego a lot they move on to somewhere else anyway.

    Just my :2cents

I agree with what Zeus says (I have to, what with him being a Greek God he could zap me with a bolt of lightning!!)

I am mod on a UK forum which is a general chat forum, Zeus knows the one, and we have a computer section on there. I'm also a member of another UK-based vd forum mostly covering television topics including satellite, cable & digital TV and related problems. it also covers general broadcasting topics. Along with those there are Internet & technology plus General Discussion forums. Take a peek:-

I didn't know you were a mod over there. Looks like I will have to start calling you Sir Maurice.

If the site is going to be re-jigged, could we have some nice comfortable armchairs? How about some dancing girls too?

    Just a thought :brow

Thanks for the further replies! I guess we'll need to change the site slogan too :)

I can see what you mean about the other sites, as a tech-support/computer site is harder to keep active - especially as any big forum will have a tech section. However, I'm keen to keep some sort of main focus for the site, whatever that may be - perhaps more gadgets, general geekiness and the other sections you mentions - so it becomes a hangout for tech minded people. That way, we could even condense some of the tech-support sections right down in to just a handful of categories like you suggested.

Any thoughts on what we could do to get it active once the sections are re-jigged, as that would only be the starting point?

    Deal :D:D:D

You jiggle it up, I will bring content :)

Especially if you give me sections for jokes, politics, and current events.

And I agree with adding more tech fields as well. Maybe a smart phone forum and a general gadgets forum of some sort.

more sci-tech and geekyness maybe...i like both of these things, and can see it working as maybe more of a place to discuss geeky things of all types, with some tech helpon the side
