I went through some old threads and had an idea. I am pushing for a re-org of the threads. With this re-org we could also add some content. There were a lot of threads that made me chuckle, and it was mostly just BSing around. I think if we can keep that atmosphere alive we will generate traffic. To keep that atmosphere alive, we need an overhaul that will give us a place to sit around and BS while waiting for someone to post a technical issue.

Here is my proposal for the new forum layout.

    Computer Support

    General Hardware
    Networking
    System Building and Upgrades
    System Security & Infection Support

    Software & Internet

    Operating Systems
    Software Support
    Internet Issues & Support
    Coding

    IT Water Cooler

    New Member Introduction
    General Discussion
    Polls & Surveys
    Media Workshop
Current Affairs (Or some other forum name that is specifically for discussing items in the news)
    Books. Movies, TV, & Music
    Jokes & Humor
    Newsgroup Archive
This would also be where to include politics & or religious forums if you so desire. (I know those topics tend to get heated at times, but being honest they do generate traffic.)
Any other suggestions for the IT water cooler? I would like to see some new categories that would generate more people's interest to just hang out here even if they aren't having computer problems. Then they will be more likely to come back here when they have problems. I think that is one reason that we don't get new members. You go to a gun forum where a bunch of gun nuts hang out and BS and it also has a computer sub-forum. Those guys are going to post their questions there, instead of going to go look for a computer forum b/c there are computer guys that are also gun nuts. Just throwing things out there. Anyway, onto the rest of the new layout suggestion...

    Forum Rules & Feedback

Forum Rules (P.S. I searched for the rules for about 10 mins and couldn't find them. They should be more easily obtainable. A single, locked thread here should do the trick)
    Site Suggestions & Feedback

I also think that the rules could be a little more lax. Where this would still be a family forum, I think keeping things rated PG13 instead of G rated would allow a little more leeway for people to express themselves without going overboard and cursing like a sailor.

I would really like to hang out here and BS like we used too...before the forum went into a coma.

    My :2cents

I agree with my homie wigga zeus here bro.

Nah, I do think that things might need shaking up a little, its no way as busy as it used to be, maybe a re-organisation might be in order

Yeah, it would be good to get the forums active again - so if a re-shuffle would help that process a bit, then it may be worth a shot.

Anyone else got thoughts on the re-shuffle?

If we did relax things to PG13, then I'd need to create a separate forum section that was viewable to members only (as guest adverts wouldn't be able to appear on those sort of pages)..

Having been involved in VB forums for many years I know what you all mean about trying the keep a forum alive and active. In the days of Facebook/MySpace/Twitter etc people seem to be leaving forums like this in droves.

Being a 'specialised' forum i.e. computer support, most people having hit a problem and posted will often disappear once they have got the problem resolved. The question is, how do you entice them into visiting regularly without watering down the general concept of the place? You can add things like sport, news, fun, music etc etc but these then depart from the ethos of the forum i.e. computer support.

It's a problem I encounter daily on a U.S. techie forum that I administer. I think Zeus (being a Greek God :lol2 ) has some good ideas.
    ---------

I think the Articles section is in need of a complete update as well. The articles are quite a bit out-of-date now.

I (as a creative person) wouldnt mind offering an RSS feed from my new works - I get some views occasionally, and it might gather some traffic - but there again not necessarily people wanting techie advice.

I do some graphic design, moving image and urban exploration FYI.

It's kinda hard because you dont want to turn the forums into a social networking site too much

I know we had a review team once, but nowadays its the latest tech that people mainly review

Another option would be to pick a new specialty rather than being just a place for tech support? Just throwing this idea out there for discussion - not necessarily saying it's the way forward ;).

There are some 'mods' who rarely visit and haven't posted for over a year. :?

I don't understand this category. Water cooler is a specialized name but yet here it is used as a general topic. I find it misleading because I would never think to look under this category unless I was looking for water cooling components.

My understanding of the term 'water cooler' relates to the fact that people meet up at the water cooler(s) in office environments and chat. I believe this is an American term rather than British but the concept is the same i.e. a spot where you can meet 'n chat.

Maybe we should invest in some of 'the newest hot sale produce' where 'the lowest price will be interested in you !'

Maybe we should rename the water cooler back to 'general chat' if its more of an issue, but for me I like the name. I also can't be bothered to change the font in this post. :(

I'd like to know what Ian plans to do about the forum software since vb 3.8 is EOL.
I don't really think XenForo would be appropriate for this type of forum, but I will stick here, no matter what he chooses to do.

I belong to a dozen of these forums and frequent 3 or 4 regularly. The ones with the most traffic have political threads. I agree facebook type sites have taken a bite out of theses forums.
I hope you can keep this one going it is my go to site when I need tech support.

So what do you say Ian? We gonna shake things up a bit? And as for shifting focus, we can do that by simply re-ordering the forum layout that I suggested. Also, if the IT Water Cooler name is confusing to some, then it could also be renamed.

(I can't think of a forum name for this. I don't like the forum name General Discussion because we have a sub-forum with the same name.)
