I was trying to be smart about a month ago and had heard it's safer to use a non-administrative account while online. I wasn't to smart, made my account a non-administrative and forgot to make another administrative account as I had in the past. Can anyone please help me, would be greatly appreciated.

    :D thanks
    Kim

It is a good idea to do this, but not the way you have described... ;)

If you right click on My Computer | Manage | Users and Groups | Groups | Double click on the Administrators Group, are there any accounts in that group?

If not, there really is nothing you can do besides running a repair install of XP.

Try your normal passwords and even no password.

If you log out and do not see the admin account, press ctrl alt del twice and from there you will have to type in admisitrator as the user name.

the account is still there, just don't remember password, so if I can't get in with no password press control, alt and delete at the same time twice, thanks

lol. I should have been a little more clear... On the welcome screen (where you are able to click on your account and login) if your admin account or any other acount that has admin power, is not there then you press c+a+d twice. This brings up the standard NT login box.

If you dont have a pw set for the admin account then yes. Or try some that you used in the past.

If that doesnt work then you will have to do what James said, repair the OS.

Remove the prompting of a passwordWhen the Recovery Console starts it will ask for your Administrator password before continuing. In many cases when you have XP pre installed on your computer the Recovery Console will not recognize your Administrator's password. In these situations it is possible to edit a registry setting so that the Recovery Console does not ask for a password. This setting works on both Windows XP Home and Pro editions.
To change this setting do the following:
    1. Click on the Start button.
    2. Click on the Run option
    3. Type regedit.exe in the open field and press the OK button.
    4. Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole

    5. Change the value of SecurityLevel value to 1

    6. Close regedit
    7. Reboot your computer.
Now the Recovery Console will no longer ask for a password.

Just read this, make any sense to anyone?

    Thanks, Kim

That's in reference to the recovery console, which won't help.
I would tell you now how to use password recovery, but it's kind of a touchy subject, so I want to get James' approval (or Zeus, I suppose, because he's a mod) to detail how to get the password back before I go on. I'm sorry I can't just say it right away, but I really don't want to risk getting banned.
So, Moderators/Administrators, can I describe how to recover a lost or forgotten Windows Password?

In and of itself, password recovery is not illegal when done in situations needed like above. However (Ovid had to see this coming ;)) I personally don't think that we should publicly post how to do it, simply because it can be used the wrong way. Feel free to PM Kim what you have in mind, and please copy James and myself with that PM.

Having said that, I'm going to go send my favorite way to do it too :)

If you do use the method that has been sent privately to you, please, be careful as you could potentially damage the account even farther. These walk-a rounds are not Microsoft supported and that's the reason why we do not post such walk-around here.
