For the last 2 months my wife's laptop has been shutting down by itself.

It started once a week and now its every day. We are not doing anything different. Does anybody know what might cause this and how to fix it.

    Thanks

Did you try to keep the laptop running in safe mode for sometime and check if the issue is happening.
Also needs to know, if the laptop is shutting down after opening or working on any particular application.Uninstalling and re-installing might help to fix it.
Also recommend to run a check disk scan on the laptop to check for any issues with bad sector or corrupted file system

    Thanks

    start>all programs>administrative tools>event viewer

With a laptop, it is most likely from overheating. I would check the vents and make sure to blow them out real good with compressed air before turning it back on. Then, as others suggested, boot into safe mode and check the event viewer.

    Yep, most likely overheating.
