Heh. So now I've gotten TWO vendor endorsements out of 50 replies-- and
I think they are replies as each of the folderolers had to hit his Reply
    Key to post;-)

no horseshit about it. $79 is cheap to have it done properly with a
    warranty.

if you break something doing it yourself, it will cost a *lot* more
    than $79 to fix it.

Not with a 4S which is WAY past its best by date.

Its completely stupid to spend that sort of money on a 4S.
    Bullshit.

whether it's stupid to keep using a 4s is a different issue entirely.

he wants to replace the battery. that's his choice, not yours.

what's stupid is trying to save $50 (after getting the battery and the
necessary tools) and risking permanent damage in the process.

Nope. What matters with a 4s is how much it costs to change the battery.

If its peanuts, and it is with other than paying Apple to do that, it does
    make sense.
You quite sure you aint one of those rocket scientist terminal fuckwits ?

Nothing to do with me, fuckwit.
He can save a lot more than that.
There is no risk of permanent damage.

    Anecdote:

One element in water heater fails. I call up the manufactirer asking
about their 10 year garantees etc.

Basically I am told: you water heater is old enough that it doesn't pay
to hire a plumber to change the element, but if you can do it yourself,
then changing element will give your water heater another 5 years before
    it needs to be replaced.

In the same vein, it doesn't make sense to pay full repair price for a
4S, but if you do it yourself, the cost is low enough that it is worth
doing if you still have use for the phone.

if you get the pentalobe screwdriver and a spudger from iFixit, changing
battery on a 4 and 4s is quite simple. The instructions on their web
site are very clear. The person can check the instructions and gauge
whether they are able to do it or not.

The "careful" portion is gently lifting battery out to allow the
adhesions to the double backed tape to break.

    Speaking of iFixIt.com,
    http://www.ifixit.com/Store/iPod/iPod-Touch-Gen-1-Replacement-Battery/IF132-005-2
says it is very difficult because the battery is soldered? :( At least
    4S is moderate difficulty. :/

    So?
That is for a Gen 1 iPod/iPod Touch, not an iPhone 4S. nobody says that
every repair or battery replacement was going to be simple, and some
folks might be best advised to stay well away from the DIY solution.
Bringing it up is irrelevant for this thread.

...and why did you add a new X-post to rec.media.players.portable.ipod?
That was not part of the OP posting. Consider that fixed.

Not really. If you do it yourself, no warranty. It is also NOT a simple
process and requires special tools. It is not DIFFICULT, but consider
that most people cannot make a box of Kraft Dinner without fucking it up
and replacing a battery on an iPhone starts to look like brain surgery.

    Yes, really.
Who cares with a 4S that is way beyond its best by
date if you have a clue about what you are doing.
So there is no point in paying 10 times as much as you need to.
Then fools like that can spend $80 on a
phone that is WAY past its best by date.

Well, there's a very good and logical reason I use that phone. We get
our cell service through a Verizon MVNO on an extremely low cost pay as
you go plan that doesn't allow 4G devices, even if flashed down to 3G.

I want to be on the Verizon network-- plus we're all committed to the
Apple OS X/iOS platform. So that really makes the iPhone 4S the best of
show. We pay only a few bucks each month for just about bullet proof
coverage/service most anyplace in the country on pretty decent iPhone.

As for spending $80 on an old phone--- well most folks piss away far
more than that each month on their cell bills, probably not using
anywhere near the minutes or data they pay for. The battery is a
one-time purchase-- $25 if I go with iFixit, $80 at the Apple store.

If I try to fix it myself and brick it, I can still sell it as a parts
phone on Ebay then pick up another one there or on Craigslist for not a
    whole lot of money.

Or maybe I'll use some of the big bucks we save on cell service and just
let the Apple geeks do it. The local Apple store Genius Bar has a couple
really hot babes working the afternoon/evening shift...
