Why did Microsoft combine the address bar and the search bar in IE9.

Often I will do a search like "New South Wales beaches"

I will then get a variety of results. I then want to narrow my search down
further by adding another term such as "South Coast", but I can't because
the single bar is now filled with the URL.

Are Microsoft that paranoid about Google that they have to change their
browser every year just to look hip?

Essentially because it fell over to being a search when it wasnt a proper url with IE8.
With google, you can just add the extra terms to the google search bar and it auto updates.
Nope, they havent changed it every year.
