Ok, I'm a newbie to php. I just set up phpBB at www.forum.andrewcarr.com. I only have 3 members right. I am looking to set up something with a few more bells and whistles to it. I've looked at EZ publish, PHP nuke and phpBB mods (love this one btw) but installing them seems like a monster task. Any suggestions on what to go with, I'm looking for something with many cool modules that's easy to install, is customizable and easy to update (also open source).

    Thanks for your suggestions!

Would love a portal but my host ICDsoft.com only offers me one database. Can I have a portal with phpBB? Will I need more databases? If I go to a portal system, will I lose the 3 members I have by having to reset the database? Many questions, very few answers.

I'm not aware of all the mods out there, but I would like it for me to be easy (real easy) to install if there was one that I liked. I know I like this sites mods.

    Thanks for the quick reply!

Woops in the last post I meant that I would like it to be easy for me to install modules or plug-ins on the portal.

Correct me if I'm wrong but portals have modules and phpBB has mods?

A portal works off from your current database. So you wouldnt lose any data at all. The only problem is you can't have a subdomain with some portals.

If your looking for good mods, goto www.phpbbhacks.com and www.phpnuke.com for portals. let me know if you need help modding your forum at all.

Ok, I think I'm going to stick to phpBB. I really like what I see when I look at the EZ portal mod (Newer Version) at http://www.phpbbhacks.com/viewhack.php?id=694
Is it safe to say that after installing that mod I would end up with something similar to the demo of it here: http://smartor.is-root.com/
with the board navigation, stats, recent topics, links, etc...

I would also like the photoalbum mod + chat box mod by Smartor but I guess I would have to install that later.

Any suggestions on what to start by. Are there any ready made packs that I could install by just overwriting files in my phpBB2 dir?

I'd start with the portal... and of course, before you edit files, always back them up somewhere.

test your mods before you implement them, test them with a mod account, and a normal user account.

Got the content in the middle and poll problem fixed this morning. I guess I just needed a good nights sleep. Tonight I would like to get the sid thingy fixed and also get a Flash banner up.

    EDITED part that follows:

Ok, now I get the sid part. I've notices all the links throughout the site have sids. Do I have to just change the forum link to index.php or do I have to change more of them. Also which file contains the linking code that I have to remove the sid from?, is it portal.php? Thanks

On your forums link, under navigation, the link includes your sid. it changes everytime you get a new IP, its just a security hole, if you publisize it like you are.. Lookin good so far!

you can edit you posts so you don't have to make me scroll through 2 posts in the past 2 mins ;)

I'm about to install more blocks to my EZportal mod. Do I need extra DBs to install additional blocks, or will they run of my existing one?

Everything you need will work off your existing DB. The only time you will need a new DB is when you want a totally separate forum.
