The XP task bar is overloaded and making loading very slow. I've tried
to get rid of some icons but they are hanging on...
I went to CRTL Panel and worked from there but most of what I did took
no notice on a restart. I went to the task bar and deleted the icons I
    didn't want. Further ideas please?

In the course of the above the task bar is hidden until the cursor is
on it. I didn't mean that to happen as I use the clock every day.

Go 'Start' - 'Settings' - 'Task Bar and Start Menu' - 'Start Menu' -
    'Customize' - 'Start Menu'

In the Windows Explorer window have a look at what is in
'Programs' - 'Start Up' ... delete the items you do not want
to open. Check this area for both the user ID you are using
    and the 'All Users' ID.

Many items are opened via here and then auto minimize to
    the taskbar.
