t's a shocker! Half-Life 2 out of seemingly nowhere has GONE GOLD! Here is the official PR we got from Vivendi announcing as much and more importantly a promise to ship the game with a shelf date of November 16th.

LOS ANGELES (October 18, 2004) Vivendi Universal Games (VU Games) today announced that Half-Life® 2, the sequel to one of the most critically acclaimed PC titles in gaming history, will ship to retail outlets around the world in November. The Company confirmed that Half-Life 2, developed by Valve Software, has gone gold with a planned retail street date of November 16, 2004. The countdown to the highly anticipated retail street date has begun around the world, as VU Games completes plans to ship localized versions of Half-Life 2 simultaneously in English, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Traditional and Simplified Chinese, Korean, Thai and Japanese.

“Half-Life 2 has surpassed our expectations in every sense – its high-quality graphics, ground-breaking physics and immersive first-person shooter gameplay set a new standard for PC action games,” said Bruce Hack, CEO of VU Games. “Half-Life 2 will go down as one of the best-selling PC titles, and we are thrilled to deliver this ground-breaking title to the worldwide gaming community this fall.”

PC Gamer gave it a 96% and said it was "Messianic"...so I geuss you could say I'm thoroughly excited.

EDIT: Conflicting reports say its actually a 98%

Yea most of the gamer mags that have rated it, have givin it their highest scores ever. Most are saying this is going to be competition for best game ever.

Also for those of you looking to get the xbox version.

    http://money.cnn.com/2004/10/18/commentary/game_over/column_gaming/index.htm

    ___
Interestingly, Lombardi refused to say whether the console version would be available for the current generation Xbox or the upcoming Xbox 2 (which analysts and publishers expect to hit retail during the 2005 holiday season) when asked. Along with the recently released "Doom 3," "Half-Life 2" is one of the most graphically intensive games to ever come out for the PC -- and the game would look dramatically different on a next gen console.
    ___

I think they will hold off and release it for xbox 2, no offence to xbox fans but the xbox is having trouble with these games with newer graphics. Im not just saying this purely on opinion either, I have read several gamer mags saying that these newer games that have came out are over stressing the system. Some of the games are cutting up, lagging, have extremely long load times, etc, etc.

November has a lot of good releases:
    • Halo 2
    • HL2
    • Metroid Prime 2
    • Mario Tennis
    • Lord of the Rings: ROTK: EE
HL2 is going to make so much $... I'm glad I pre-ordered my copy. If you want to play HL2 and don't want to d/l it, you need to pre-order if you want it the day it comes out.

If money is an issue, you could purchase a $30 LG DVD-ROM. Excellent price.

Half-Life 2 is still the greatest FPS ever made. ... The fact is that Half-Life 2 still executes its concepts, conceits and mechanics more effectively, deftly, and powerfully than almost any of its imitators have in the 10 years since. That's why it's still the best, and that's why I'm still playing it.
