Is there a program that can image all the contents of your hard drive to an
external drive without any compression? Such a cloned image would be
immediately readable without any need to unzip or use any other means of
decompression and the external drive could simply replace your internal one
    should it crash.

Some motherboards support Raid 1, why not just use that?

I wish I had started with Raid 1, but don't know if conversion to Raid 1 at
    this point would work safely.

RAID1 only gives protection against data loss in the case of HD failure,
and the HD is one of the most reliable pieces of a PC. RAID1 gives no
protection against data loss due to a bad PS or bad RAM or a bad MoBo or
the environment (e.g., lightning) or malware or -- the all-time leading
cause of data loss -- fumble fingers.

If you like RAID, use it; but you still need to backup your data.
