Sometimes when I boot up my machine, after it's been down for a number
    of hours . . .
Well what happens is that the CD Rom starts to whiz up, like it does
when it starts to read a CD.
It doesn't always happen. I switch the machine off, and press the start
button again, after which mostly things get back to normal.

Anyway, anyone any idea why this happens ?

is there a CD in it?

If there is it is trying to read it and trying to boot from it.

check your BIOS boot set up and make sure you do not
leave any bootable cds in it.
