Problem, XP (sp1) boots to just before welcome screen, then proceeds to
freeze. Blue screen (not bsod) with xp logo, just stays on, machine requires
    switch off.

Machine wont boot into safe mode.
Using erd commander, I have restored the system to the day before. Works
fine, do a scan for viruses and spyware. Machine riddles with hundreds of
pieces of spywayre. Use adaware and spybot to remove spyware.
Use hijack this to give it a clean out. When reboots, same thing happens.

Machine has macafee, thought maybe its updates where causing the problem,
    removed, same problem.

Anybody else encountered the problem? Looking like a reinstall job..

  2. Remove spyware and viruses, reboot from Windows install Cd and do a
repair (install over the original)? Sounds like something has buried
itself so deep that removing it kills the patient. You could try one of
the online scanners (House call or whatever). OTOH if these 'hundreds of
pieces' are just tracking cookies, no big deal.

I assume the memory tests out OK, and the motherboard isn't sporting
dozens of leaky capacitors, and suchlike?

  3. No you don't
    No it doesn't
    Hmmnn, no.
I think a repair install may work, unless it is a virus.

  4. Not if you do it properly .. it will reset some registry items, but
should affect installed programs in any way.
