i have a canon s520 printer which has been in use for just over two
years now. about ten days ago i was having some problems with the
colours getting mixed up so i took out the printhead to look at
exactly what was going on. when i replaced it the same problem
persisted. there was however, a new problem, i can only print in
    colour but not in black.

if you change the setting to envelope by flicking a switch in the
printer and choose to have your a4 sheet set as envelope it will print
everything in black and full colour.

i have bought a new inkhead and even replacing it does not improve
    anything.

i have now unistalled and then reintslled the printers, do have the
latest drivers from the canon site but still it won't print black when
it is set to a4 sheet.

    what am i overlooking?!?
    Kindest regards

The printer is broken. Possbily a board fault in the printer. Cheapest option is to
buy an new printer and bin the old one.

i don't think it is broken. otherwise it would not be printing black
in the envelope mode. i have done a little bit of reading on this
subject and it seems canon printers are known to suffer from an ink
dumping problem if used frequently. i have had mine over two years and
it is going through the same clogged up wasted ink.
