Want to copy some .mov files to the iPhone to Air Play tonight after
Xmas supper. (Old 8mm and VHS stuff that was put into .mov).

I copy them to the iTunes library and sync. There is indication they
are transferring to the iPhone. But nothing on the iPhone (photo
    albums, video album).

    What did I miss?

With my set up all media; music & video is moved manually. So after
loading into iTunes I just drag & drop within iTunes.

Then I don't seem to have any .mov files in iTunes. All the movies &
videos I have there, including stuff bought via iTunes and videos &
movies I have run through Handbrake, are all .m4v or mp4.
The only .mov files I have on my iPhone are videos shot with the iPhone.

I have found that on import into iOS devices, some of those .m4v files
will be arbitrarily designated as "Home Videos", the group to be
selected on the bottom right of the open Videos App.

So on my 64GB iP5S I only keep videos I might currently want access to
& Podcasts of interest (in the Podcast App) all purchased/subscribed to
stuff is in iCloud and easily downloaded.
Here is what I have in my Videos App, "Home Videos", loaded this AM,
    and it is an m4v.

Makes sense. In the iPhone info (via settings) I do see the videos.
    Can't play them from there.

In iTunes I do see the videos as loaded on the iPhone.

However "Home Videos" is not shown in the photos folder on the iPhone.

    Disregard. Got it. Thanks.

The strange thing is that I can launch a video shot from my iPhone
within the "Photos" app so I assumed that's where all videos were
    launched from.

(Never bothered with video downloads on the iPhone 4)

    Merry Christmas.

Does Videos app output to Air Play? Can't get that to go. (It will
from Photos when I play a video from there ... of course only those
videos shot with the iPhone ...)

Correct. There is no "Home Videos" in the iPhone Photos folder.
All the imported videos & movies are in the *Videos* app. That is where
*Home Videos*, as shown in the DB link, is to be found.

In the Photos folder there is an album labeled "Videos" and that is
only for videos created with the iPhone.
Here are a few I shot with the iPhone, in the Videos album of the
Photos folder. Those are .mov files.

That's fine - but I can't Air Play those out to the Apple TV from there
(as far as I can see...) whilst it's feasible when playing a video made
on the phone from the Photo app.

This *Video* App. It is one of the iPS default apps.

The one called "Videos". It's a standard installation with iOS; did
you remove it from your device?

Never used it before (iPhone 4) - assumed that since videos made on the
phone would play from the "Photos" app that that applied to videos
    downloaded to the phone.

Between you and JR it's now solved.

    - Video app for videos copied to the iPhone.
    - Mirroring (from the swipe up control panel) to the AppleTV.

    Works fine.

    Merry Christmas.

  15. You have to turn on Air Play from the Control Center.

  16. I can see a logic in not having Air Play in the Videos app. The app is
designed to play movies, TV shows, etc., purchased from the iTunes
Store. Once purchased, you can download them directly to the Apple TV,
so there's no need to stream them from the iPhone or iPad. In the case
of Home Videos, they're on the computer, and you can stream them from
there via Air Play, so again, no need to put them on the iDevice.

Of course, there are some situations that do require streaming from the
iDevice to the Apple TV, but they're out of the mainstream, and can be
handled by activating Air Play from the Control Center.

Even though for many years now Usenet traffic has mostly been carried
over the Internet, propagation isn't instantaneous, and the other people's
responses to your question hadn't shown up on my news server when I posted
    that, else I wouldn't have.

Anyway, glad you got it sorted out.

Photos - video play -> "Send To" button -> Air Play

Video - video play -> no Air Play except via the Control Centre.

The inconsistency is "Photos" having an Air Play (via the "Send To" button).

On the iMac I Air Play the screen to the Apple TV - in that sense, Video
on the iPhone is like on the Mac.

Mine isnt, the podcasts are moved automatically.
I don’t load the stuff I do manually into iTunes, just
use iTunes to move it into the phone, normally the
stuff I download for the kids from pirate bay.
The stuff I get from pirate bay can be in all sorts of formats and
quite a few of them arent recognised by the iphone as something
it can play. So I installed VLC and manually move the file to the
    phone's VLC using itunes.

VLC isnt always available in the play store tho.

Still produces a much more consistent UI by allowing it from anywhere
even tho it may not be used from the iDevice that much.
