Today, I received a phishing email pretending to be Netflix, and
providing not only my full name but also first and last 4 digits of
    credit card and expiry date.

My the stupid bank was not interested in a copy of the email (showing
someone stole a database of credit card info), they promptly canceled my
card and I must now wait a few days for a new one.

It is a real pain to have to change credit card number for all
subscriptions (ISP, amazon, netflix, paypal etc).

How does it work for Apple Pay ?

Do subscriptions/pre-authorized debits get tied to the real/persistant
card number or can Apple issue sperate CC numbers for each subscription
which means that if one merchant's datbase gets compromised, only that
credit card number if cancelled ?

Since the wholesale theft of databases is a big problem these days, the
temporary credit card numbers issued under Apple Pay when you shop at
brick and mortar shop is of little help if you have to provide your
real/permanent credit card number to on-line merchants.

applepay uses a device number (which looks like a credit card number
for compatibility) and a one-time token. the merchant does not get your
actual card number *or* your name.

if a store's database is compromised, the bad guys get a bunch of
    numbers that are completely useless.

But those fake credit card numbers have very short lived expiration
dates. So you can't use such a number for long term subscriptions or
payment methods such as your ISP, Paypal, Itunes etc.

Yeah, if you shop at Winners and they publish your credit card number,
that number won't do much good since it will expire soon. But that
doesn't help when an on-line store which has a permanent credit card
    numbver on file gets compromised.
