I'm trying to buy a new entry - mid level gaming card. The number of
different specifications and naming systems out there is a little
overwhelming. Anyone got suggestions on good places to read about the
current status of things? Or someone could just run through the basics
    regarding fx5200's, 5700's, radeon 9600se's, 9550's, etc...

    Mid level ..

top of the range is around $900 ... entry level is $70 .. mid range .. $300
    ?

Get yourself a Radeon 9600XT . damn good price vs performance ratio.

THG [tomshardware.com] normally is a good place to start

Watch out which brand you get. The Excalibur radeon, for example, is shit.
My old Geforce 2 Pro went smoother than it did on the same game.

I went 9600 Pro on ATI Radeon and haven't had a reason to regret that. Only
problem now is that some demos want a 2Ghz chip and I am stuck at 1.7Ghz for
    now. Sigh....
