Windows 95 Laptop

Hi everyone

I have a Toshiba laptop which was designed to run Windows 95. I dusted it down and to my surprise, it booted normally. I wanted to clear the files from it so I booted to DOS and formatted the hard drive. When I rebooted, it didn't recognise the floppy or hard drive.

I have a CD which sits in a bay, a floppy and hard drive. There's no USB. Is it likely that I can use this for anything useful? The hard drive is 3GB but I don't know how much RAM is on board. I can't find any recovery discs - so what's the recommendation? Is it likely that I can get it to run anything useful?

Try resetting the defaults in the BIOS and than boot from a 98 or ME disk. You won't be able to get anything else installed on the laptop besides those two OSes or Linux.

I looked at the BIOS. It only has the boot options HDD then floppy, floppy then HDD, HDD then second HDD. There isn't the option of booting from the CD.

Come to think of it, is it even possible to get a 98 or ME disk any longer?

Do you have an option to reset back to the default BIOS options? You can get them on ebay.

Yes, I can go back to the default BIOS settings. I had considered eBay but can't be sure that a 98 or ME disk would be genuine. I guess I don't really have much choice but to try there or trash the laptop! If I decided to do that (very unlikely), at least I could take out the hard drive and access it via a USB-based caddy that I have.

Thanks again.

I'm not sure what else to try besides removing the CD-ROM drive, boot, shutdown and than add the drive back.

Yes, it's going to have to be pretty basic, by today's standards, but I'll need an OS first!

I have an newer model (based on what you have described) which includes USB and until I got a laptop from work, I used my old Toshiba to get online when traveling. It is slow, but kept me in touch. It has 64 Mb RAM. Just for kicks I tried loading Win2000, but even though theoretically it should run, it doesn't. Good luck with it, and in a worse case scenario, use it as a print server!
