Which distro should I use?

I am finding that Fedora Core 5 is giving me some trouble, I'm not sure if it's me or if it's due to being in the beta stages.

So, what would you recommend to someone who is semi-new to Linux and wants to play around with the shell?

Arch is good for experts who really wanna get their teeth into their Distro. Debian is very good - I suggest playing around with it - It's good for Intermediate users who know what they are doing.

I like Ubuntu personally, you might check that out.

I agree. I am surfing the web in Kubuntu right now . Also, you can get some live versions of Linux (too many to name) that run from the CD if you don't want to give up a a box to Linux. That's what I done until I got comfortable enough to make a computer run on only Linux. There are also so many versions of ubuntu out there right now, you can find one geared towards your specific needs.

Red Hat is pretty easy to setup and play around with. Others that I have used are Knoppix and Slax.

I agree, Red Hat has always been good, but FC5 has not been so good. I'll give Ubuntu or Knoppix a try.
