This dell screen show text during boot (setup pf2, boot menu pf12, inspron 1521 on bottom). If you hit setup the hole screen turns to little blue hearts. Back light seems to be working Fn + arrow keys change the brightness. This PC crashed a couple of weeks ago with Vista, with this same problem, thought it was a Vista problem. I have just loaded XP pro and loaded all of the drivers i thought required. Every thing seem to work fine with my external monitor. I have good sound, Wirless, CD/DVD rom and ether net. All work fine. same concern that was there when Vista on this 2 year old PC. The only way I can boot this PC is with the external monitor to load any thing because you cant see the on screen prompts.
I did a system check and it shows error code 2000-0334. Looking at other forms they have tried replacing the Screens with no help. Nobody has put a fix out there yet. E bay has the 1521 for sale with the same concern, to be used with exteral monitors only.
Trying to reason with the concern, My drivers must be working to bring text and the blue hearts up on the screen and be able to run the external screen?

Hi Kenny, you say that you Loaded XP Pro onto the laptop. Did all the screens show ok during the install? At the point that the install switches from text-based to graphics-based screen were you able to see anything?

The fact that the system works ok with an external monitor tells me that the basics features of the graphics array are working but a fault has developed somewhere in the circuits connecting the graphics array to the display. It could be a problem in the cable that runs through the hinge and up to the display.

How old is this laptop? If it's not too old it could be repaired.

I could not finish loading XP till I put the external monitor on because i could not see the on screen promps. Text shows up on the screen duing the first page and during any of the screen under the f12 boot screens. If i hit f3 setup the hole screen turns to blue hearts like they were typed on the page. during the self test the screen does not show the color bars that I can see when I use the eternal monitor. But it does do the complete colored screen red blue ect.

He said it's 2 years old. LCD failures seem to be common among Dell laptops.

I don't know where Kenny is but in the UK Dell kit usually comes with three years warranty so it could be fixed by Dell for free.

Dell warranty is only two years here its out by a half year. After you out of warranty Dell is only interrested in taking you money. Cant even talk or e-mail them without paying them. My last Dell product.

I think it going to E- Bay for parts.

Hey Kenny, I have seen this issue before.

Your mobo is bad. If you were to take it to a shop to fix it would be around 400-500 to have fixed. There are a couple mobos for sale on ebay, so if you're not afraid to take out about 15-20 screws you can replace it your self for about 100-200 bucks.

I've been working on Dells for quite some time now and have seen some pretty interesting parts go bad. The Inspiron line is fairly easy to work with (hardware) compared to the Vostro or even other companies laptops.

If you have any questions about popping any of the parts off let us know.
