Using a router as a bridge?

I recently changed broadband provider, and they gave us a new router to use with their ADSL (whereas I was with a cable provider before).

This new Netgear router is fine, but we are having trouble getting the signal fully at the opposite end of the house.

I was thinking about using my old Belkin Pre-N router to use as a sort of bridge or relay the signal from a more central position in the house to the opposite part where the signal isn't as good.

How do I go about this? The netgear router is connected to the phone line, where does the Belkin router go and how do I set it up to achieve this...if it is possible?

I would appreciate the answer in layman's terms, since my Internet/router configuration jargon is a little bit basic!

Thanks,
Karan

From what I know, you can't do what you want with what you have. The setup I have in my house (works pretty well) is two Linksys WRT54GL's with OpenWRT firmware installed on them. OpenWRT allows you to not only boost the signal considerably, but you can configure the router to either rebroadcast the signal (in one antenna, out the other) or to act as a wireless bridge, where clients are hardwired into the second router and talk to devices on the wireless network.
With the third party firmware you may find that since you can boost the power levels, you don't even need a second router.

Hmm, ok, where would I go about finding said third party firmware for Netgear routers?

Try this page for starters. From the Main Page link you can find a list of supported devices for this third party firmware.
