Trouble with DNS

Hey everyone.

I'm having problems with a local area network and DNS. ATM, my DNS servers are 192.168.0.1 (My Netgear DG834G Router) and 192.168.0.2 (My Linux Box). I don't really understand the concept of DNS but could somebody point me in the right direction in terms of the following questions:

1. Does my router (Netgear DG834G) support DNS for local area networks?
2. My Linux Box. Do I have to have a special DNS Server Daemon running to provide DNS Services to my network? Or do I just have to have a hosts file with all of my hosts in it? Or is it something to do with my SMB\NMB Services (Samba)?
3. What is the point of LMHOSTS and HOSTS files?

Thanks a lot.

Cheers,

-Sandoo

Your router is acting as the DNS server now, you can tell it not to and have another machine do that instead. DNS basically is a routing / translator server that translates IP addresses into human names and vs.

A HOSTS file can be used to point clients to certain things. For example, your comptuer, 192.168.1.5 could be added to a HOSTS file like this: 192.168.1.5 www.yahoo.com

So once you save that file on your machine, if someone on that machine typed in yahoo.com they would get directed to that IP.
