[tip] Backup to a cd-rom using ntbackup

Windows XP backup is limited to what media you can back up to. It does not give you the option to backup to a cdr/cdrw, which most computers have these days.

To work around this follow these steps:

Open up Ntbackup

1. click start
2. go to programs
3. click on accessories
4. click on system tools
5. click on backup

Next step:

Select the files you want to backup

Code:
 C:\documents and settings\username (this is your account)\local settings\application data\microsoft\cd burning\backup.bkf
This will be your backup destination. When the backup finishes Windows XP will prompt you to write the backup to a cdr/cdrw.

I really hope this helps some of you setting up a regular backup plan!

media backup tip

Wow! Thanks for the tip! I just tried it and it works like a charm! I perform regular backups (had to do it manually before by making copies of my important files and folders) so this will be much easier. Its so obvious! Why didn't I think of it before?

It works, sure --- but it's just as easy to back up your data using manual cd-burning, plus you can see the individual files on the cd when it's done so you can select individual files to restore if you want. Windows backup just creates one proprietary image file and if the backup prog stops working you're stuffed when it comes to restoring.
