    Hi,
I really hope someone can help me -
I have got a US keyboard as a replacement for my broken laptop one and all
is fine except I cannot get backslash except through the character map!
The backslash key puts up on screen a hash, and a tilde with shift held
    down.
My keyboard is set to UK, all the other symbols work (e.g. I get £ with
shift and 3 held down etc)
I really need backslash as I use it all the time!!
I am running win xp home version on this machine.
I have googled but not found any solutions at all,
Thanks for any help at all :)

You need to set your keyboard to US, then you will get the right
    characters to match the keys.

Alt-3 (or maybe alt-gr 3) might get you a £ symbol; if not, I tend to
    use eg 29ukp.

Yeah, I have an oldish Sony VAIO laptop that my dad bought in the US.

I use the US keymap so that the keys work as they are labeled.

A way that you can get the £ sign with the US keyboard is to switch on the
number pad mode and type Alt+0163. It's not exactly much quicker than using
the Character Map thing though. It's more useful on full size keyboards,
where the number pad is separate.

Some applications let you choose an 'unoccupied' F-key to do jobs. Have
a look in the relevant helpfile, or under 'Tools' on the toolbar.

The information is out there - try
    http://searchwinit.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid1_gci962513,00.html
    for example.

XP has a facility to remap keys. I have used this to get a US keyboard
working on a UK laptop. I also swapped the keycaps from a broken
equivalent UK keyboard so I've ended up with a hybrid UK/US keyboard.
But at least all the keys do what they say they should, even if their
    position is slightly non-standard.

Why can't you use the Control Panel, Regional and Language Options, to tell XP
that you have a US keyboard?

I don't have a US keyboard to test it, but this is the method I use to tell XP I
actually have a UK keyboard when I miss setting it to UK during installation.
It probably works the other way...
