    Because application installation gets intertwined with the Windows OS, it
    would be extraordinarily difficult to just do the OS and still have your
    apps work without a reinstall of each. Far better to save all your data
    files, do the recovery and then reinstall the applications. If you have a
    lot of apps, use something like belarc advisor to get a detailed printable
    list of what you have.installed and check off the ones you want to
    reinstall. If you're like me, they will be many you won't want to bother
    with.
