Think my CRT may have just died

Hey

all of a sudden today my monitor screwed up on me. I was playing even when suddenly a 5cm bar on the right side goes black and the pictures moves left. ( not distorting the picture size, just cutting some off). The screen was also shaking a little with "lines" of distortion. (like the picture isn't synced?)

I used the controls to just move the picture back which worked fine except that its really shaky and distorted now.

When I grab a screen cap the distortion isn't there .... better my monitor than my new video card.

yeah most likely your monitor is going bad. how old is it? also, check the connections to make sure its not loose or anything and also make sure the video card is seated properly.

Its old ... I bought it used and I've had it for three or four years. wiggling the connections sort of helps ... it gets clearer but only for a little while.

are there any magnets or cell phones next to the monitor? If not, then it's probably going.

ah yeah. my gf's dad gave me a 3 year old 17inch CRT and it lasted for about 8 months or so. it started flickering and turning purple, but would go away if i wiggled the connector a little. the time it stayed normal decreased as more time passed and eventually, wiggling the connector did nothing.

Are there any other electrical appliances near the monitor? A fan, TV, etc. could also cause some distortion.

Have you tried changing the outlet the monitor is plugged into?

ahh well there is a lamp slightly close to my monitor, as well as my router, as they have always been.

No, I didn't try a different outlet but I'm just going to get another cheap used one instead of hoping thing one can be salvaged. I only just bought a new paintball marker (and video card) plus I still need a tank and to get out on the field ... as much as I want to take this chance to buy a nice widescreen, I'm not going to. heh.
