Do I need this to run?

What is this?

Why is it taking up so much resources?

Yes, you need it. Check out this thread for more info. SVCHOST "manages" a host of DLL files that your system / programs need.

Unless its actually called 'srvhost.exe' or something a lot like it.
Check for these registry keys
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run \Generic Service Process
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Services\Generic Service Process
If those entries exsist, you may have a trojan thats been spreading like mad lately called 'phatbot'
To remove it, delete those keys and stop srvhost.exe
Then reboot, and use the find command to find srvhost.exe and delete it

Good thinking there. Phatbot is a nasty virus.
