Strange colour probs with Photoshop

Why is it if I view a picture in Photoshop, all the colours are like, 5 times lighter?

Paint:

Photoshop

In browsers and any other paint program I have on here, it looks exactly how it does in Paint - how come Photoshop is different?

In a word (all right, two words): Color profiles. A thorough explanation would take time I don't have at the moment (I'm about to head out the door for round 2 with that computer), but take a look at the color profiles in photoshop (near the bottom of the window) when you first open the file. A google search on some or all the terms "adobe photoshop color profiles" should turn up a wealth of information on the subject.

Managed to sort it.

Image - mode - assign profile - use drop down box - select same color profile as my monitor.

Now it all looks the same! thanks codex

Okay, I have been trying to figure out how to do that for a long time. Thanks to both of you.
