Last week I had another Hitachi/IBM drive fail on me. Almost every drive I've had fail has been one of those - whilst all my others have been chugging along fine (had lots of Maxtors and a few Seagates over the years).

This time I thought I'd go a Western Digital drive, as I've not used one for a very long time and this particular drive had good reports. Performance seems slightly better than my old drive and it's very quiet - so I'm pleased with that. However, the most important thing is reliability which I can't judge yet.

Which hard drive make would you go for, given the choice?

hmmmm.......good question.

I used to be a Maxtor fan, and found Seagate drives to be rubbish, but then Seagate bought Maxtor, so I don't buy Maxtor any more. Go figure.

I have a Hitachi Drive myself, the HDT725032VLA360, and it's been running fine now for 3 years, so I myself wouldn't have a problem getting a Hitachi Drive.

Saying that, I probably now, when looking to buy a HDD, would only really look at Samsung and Western Digital HDD's.

The 1 TB Samsung one I've got is absolutely fantastic.

I've had great results from a succession of Western Digital drives.

That is the exact model I had go pair shaped last week

It started making a loud clicking sound and when running the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test utility it said that there was several bad sectors and it gave me an error code to send back for replacement under warranty (I had about 1 month left till it ran out).

Some of every type of drive fail at some point, so I wouldn't worry about it - I think I just have bad luck with IBM/Hitachi drives!

A few months ago I bought a hitachi 500gb for on of my servers. Hope I don't have these same problems. The only reason I got the hitachi was the price.

I've been running SeaGate for the past 14 years without any problems. Out of 6 drives they all work great
