Hey guys

So frustratingly enough my wife managed to completely infect her computer to the point where its useless. In the interm she has been using mine a little bit and surprisingly I now have several virus ... um viri?

anyway the PROBLEM

Windows is currently treating my two DVD-RW drives as one DVD-RAM drive and one CD Drive. First it was seeing two CD drives untill I put a dvd into one. They are still listed in my device manager as Liteon DVD-RW blablabla but no burning software will recognize them as burners.

Uninstalling/Reinstalling the drives has no effect. Windows installs them again as DVD-RW drives but then wont treat them as such.

Any thoughts? Is this a software thing or are the drives fried?

When you say uninstalling and re-installing the drives, are you using the latest drivers on the re-install.

Also do a full malware/spyware/virus scan and clean up the viruses.

If you've got multiple viruses on your PC and having problems like this, I'd just bite the bullet and format your PC and start from afresh Trying to fix a DVD drive problem while your computer is still infected is just tinkering round the edges

Go into regedit
HKLM>System>CurrentControlSet>Control>Class
One of the folders on the left will be for your Cd-Rom/DvD-Rom drive, once you find the right one (its near the top) you may find an upper and/or a lower filter, just delete it and restart your computer.

If that doesn't work I may have a few other ideas to try.

I can't even read the words "Gaia Online" and not be reminded of Boxxy.

I've pretty much given up on this problem, I seem to have to many issues to track them down individually. I just hope its not a hardware thing
