Slaving a HDD
Hey guys.
I bought a new HDD(250GB) and installed windows on it, and I used NTFS file format. Now the thing is, I still have a LOT of documents on the old HDD (which is FAT32). I thought I could slave the old HDD alongside the new one to copy my documents over, but windows says that the drive is unformatted. I know it has my stuff on it, and I was thinking that maybe it is the fact that my current installation uses NTFS, and the old drive is FAt32. Any suggestions as to what I could do? Thanks

Even though you are now using NTFS it should still read the FAT32 drive.
Do you have any Linux live CDs?

nope. I was reading on the googles that it might be to do with the fact my master drive is set to 'cable select', and the slave is set to 'slave'. I'll try setting the master to 'master' instead of 'cable select'

That is most likely the problem.

If you're going to run a configuration like that, you should always make sure one is set as master and one is set to slave. It solves a lot of problems.

nope, hasnt worked. My primary HDD is set to master, and is first on the IDE cable, and the older HDD is set as slave, and is second on the IDE.
Any other suggestions? I really need the data off my old HDD

Get a Linux live CD (any one of them) and try to access your drive like that.

What Zeus said will be your best bet given the situation.
You could try placing the second hdd in another computer and try to copy the data off that way too.

thanks, someone i know has a live CD, I'll pick it up at the next LAN, in like 2 weeks time. ALTHOUGH, the data I needed urgently I had backed up on an external HDD - I impressed myself!
