SD card transfer

I got a new camera (canon sd 800) and I really want to be able to transfer a large avi file from the 4gb memory card to my computer. Card is a high speed SD card. I have xp pro sp2, the camera is capable to use a 4gb card. When I try to transfer the file (3.3gb) from the camera it diosnt do anything. Some of the previous files 1.1 - 2.8 gb never gave me any problems. Why does the whole computer just freeze? What should I know about transfering large files like this? Do I need a card reader? Beacause my old card reader only recognizes it as a 900mb card (I have found out why with google, it is an older card reader and doesnt know how to read an SDcard so big.

So you try and drag and drop the file to your desktop and it causes the operating system to freeze?
And how do you have the camera connected to your computer? Is it plugged in via USB? Or do you have the card out and plugged into a dedicated card reader?
Does the card reader recognize the card at its full 4 gigabyte file size?

Well at first the car reader didnt recognize the size of the card, and wanted to reformat it. Then it wouldnt read it from the camera, since then even with a dedicated NEW card reader it still wont recognize the file. Everytime I enter the folder on the card with the card reader I get and explorer error message that it needs to close explorer, and it does the whole restart windows explorer. When I thought I had trnsfered the file successfully to a new folder the same thing happens. Explorer crashes everytime I try to enter the folder. I think it may have something to do with the avi file. Is there editing software that I mght be able to use to shrink it (cut it into smaller peices ) so I dont loose the graduation video?

I finally got the file. I went into search, found the file on the card cut and paste it. When I clicked on the video file the windows explorer error came up again, I ignored it till the cut and paste transfer was done. I can open it with VLC but not Real (I prefer the asthetics of Real). I am going to try to convert it to DVD. Hopefully it wont choke Nero. Why would that happen? Everytime you click on the file or on the folder explorer it chokes. I smell somethin fishy cause with other large avi it never had any probs.

Please if you can help me solve this conumdrum I would appreciate it.

Cheers

Have you tried win movie maker? you can inporting or capture. I too am curious how you have this card connected to the machine. Cause winxp is pretty jazzy about connecting with video devices. Did the camra come with any software that you might be needing to use?
