Rebuild a Packard Bell PC with a different OS

A friend gave me an old Packard Bell PC (595MHz, 64MB RAM and Win98 SE). I'd like to rebuild it in a smaller case (I know that it must accommodate the motherboard and I'd have to be careful regarding cooling), increase the RAM and also install a "clean" (OEM) Win98, rather than that which is there and displays Packard Bell all over the desktop.

The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-6WMM7 rev 2.0. I can't find this exact board on the Gigabyte site but it is there on the Packard Bell site. Is it possible that Packard Bell have somehow made this board only work with their software package or is it likely that I could do just what I want? I'm under the impression that the board is generic but, as the exact board is only listed on the Packard Bell site, rather than the Gigabyte site, I'm a little reluctant to set about what I'd like to do. The system works at present and I don't want to wreck it by messing around. I don't have the recovery disk which came with the PC because it was lost ages ago.

Advice from experts out there would be appreciated!

If PacBell has the drivers then you should be just fine. Just download them and put it and the rest of the drivers you're going to need for the hardware on a CD and run with it.

What is going to be the purpose for this computer? If you plan to do more than Web browsing I'd suggest something less WIN9X/ME.

Also with placing the computer into a new case you must be carefull with the power button, and make sure that the PSU will fit.

Thanks for the tips.

@Crimson - Basically, I want to use the PC for "experiments". I'm doing an A+ course so have various OS installation disks, along with a couple of other old, but working, PCs. I'll be doing the N+ next so want to have various PCs and OSs to use in a laboratory situation.

@Goober - the case I'm looking at comes with a PSU. I'll ensure the power button and front panel LEDs are compatible with the board.
