Re-Install Windows 98

Right now my computer is cluttered with filth, but it does contain some valuable files that are too big for floppies (I don't have a burner). So I was wondering if is is possible to Re-Install windows without wiping out all these valuable files, which are located in one folder on my C drive.

Thanks

PS. Where can I find all the information about my computer to put in my sig inorder to help you fellas out? I am completely unable to figure this out on Windows 98.

You could get Belarc (www.belarc.com). But, then you may want to narrow down what it lists. It lists everything you have.

You can put all of your data in a folder and reinstall over you existing install, but all of your old programs, etc will still be there but not work. It's not the best way to go. Do you have another HDD?

ah, ooo....tough question to answer...

but no, I don't think there is a way to back up all your stuff, so investing in a CD burner would probably be your best bet.

for the PC information go to CPUID and get PC Wizard 2004.

It will tell you all about your PC.

No I don't have another hdd, but I do have a laptop. Would there be a way to connect the two and transfer the files. I don't have a network... lol

Yes there would.

THere is a program than can transer the files over without having to network them, But I can't remember it atm .

Although, I do have another sugestion.

Have you got winRAR? if not, then it's here.

Now, click the file you want to transfer over to your laptop, then click on "Add to archive.."

Then when the box thing comes up (look at attachments below) click on "slipt to volumes, bytes, 3.5"

then it will compress your files into .rar format, so you can copy htem to floppy disk and copy them to your Laptop. But this will take some time

Good suggestion S Walch. If you have a NIC in your laptop and PC, you could get a crossover cable and copy the files that way too.

Was about to suggest that, but then thought if he hasn't got a CD burner then he probably hasn't got a Network card either

But I'm just assuming.

But if so, then my WinRAR method is the one for you

Just remember though, someting over 100 MB is gonna take a looooooong time to transfer

There are many ways:

1. Network (1x Crossover cable and 1x PCI Network Card and 1x PCMCIA Network Card)
2. Direct Cable Connection - This will take ages!
3. WinRAR method as S Walch suggested
4. Swapping HDDs with a friend for a while and backing ur stuff up on that
5. The best way...........1x AU$85.00 USB 2.0 Flash Drive!! (512mb or whatever)

good luck!

I agree that the best way would be to get a ZIP/Flash drive. Assuming both computers support a USB connection (not all machines running Win98 do). Networking the two machines temporarily is most likely the fastest and if the cards are already in place, possibly cheapest way. Zipping and floppying is slow, especially on large files, and the risk of data corruption is - to me anyway - significant. Direct cable connection isn't too fast but it does work, although can be complicated to set up, depending on user's skill level and the equipment they have. Swapping HDDs is not for those without enough hardware experience, IMO.
