Question on Win Server and Router
Hi there.
I was wondering if anyone can help with me with creating a network. I have Windows 2003 Server, 3 workstations, 2 laptops, 2 Linksys routers (1 wireless router) I want to have windows 2003 server as an active directory, DHCP, and DNS configured. I don't know exactly how to setup the server to handle everything, and keep the router's firewall. I also need to to have the server to give out the DNS and DHCP to the workstations and both laptops and have them be able to access the internet. Also I need help configuring the linksys routers in the proper manner for this design. If some of you guys can chime in who have networks with similar setups, I would grately appreciate it. Network Information: Router: BEFSR41 Router: WRT54G (wireless for laptops) 1 Windows 2003 Server ( 2 NIC Cards Installed) 3 Workstations and 2 laptops with Windows XP Professional Thanks, Che |

Frist, log onto the server and run DCPROMO if you have not yet, configure a local domain name, something.local (unless you want to have external users access your domain for specific reasons) and configure DHCP through the snap-in and then DNS. After, create your AD accounts, groups, group policies (if applicable). Once that is done, disable DHCP on your router. Remember in the DHCP console on the server, create a pointer to point to your router's IP.
That should get you started. |

Hopefully this is correct:
BEFSR41: 192.168.10.1 (DHCP Disabled) WRT54G: 192.168.10.2 (Wireless) DHCP Enabled Windows Server: IP: 192.168.10.3 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.10.2 DNS: 192.168.10.2 DNS: 192.168.10.3 (Only the following IP Addressed Radio selected) Reverse lookup zone: 10.168.192.in-addr.arpa DHCP: Scope: 192.168.10.10 - 192.168.10.254 Scope Options: 003 - Router 192.168.10.1 006 - DNS Servers 192.168.10.3 015 - DNS Domain Name xxxxx.local Windows XP Pro Workstation: IP address: Automatic What I'm trying to do is to have everything access the server. However, the laptops are not part of the domain. The workstations are joined to the domain, and I only want them to receive network information from the Server(i.e. DNS, DHCP) If this is correct please let me know. It seems to work, but somethings says its wrong

DHCP should be disabled on the WAP too, it will get an IP from the DHCP server or what you should do if you can, is assing a static IP in the device or via the DHCP console via the device's MAC.
I take it the wired device has the WAN connection? If so, gateway should point to it, internal DNS should point to your server. Most of it looks ok, fix the couple of problems and you should be all set. |
