Programs closing by themselves

Hi all, I have a problem on my Win98 computer. Some programs terminate automatically whenever I access spyware-removal related stuff. When I open Internet Explorer, the home page is automatically set to 'smartsearch.ws'. It's obvious by now that it's some spyware or virus at work. However, whenever I enter a URL, it redirects me to this web page again. This is really irksome, as it prevents me from surfing. Btw, I am using Firebird now as a browser. However, I like Slimbrowser better. ^^ Any help would be appreciated.
