Programming Problem

Hi. I volunteered to reprogram a computer for someone. It is a gateway laptop that came with windows xp pro "Restore CD" Your supposed to put the cd in drive restart the computer and then follow the on screen instructions (it sounds so simple doesnt it ). I get about halfway through the installation and i get a "Cyclic Redundency Check" error. It says to try to clean the CD-ROM drive, so i did. This did not help. when i restart the computer it just goes back to the place in the setup where the error occured. I figure i would try to install windows 98 using a start up disk, and then install XP later on. the problem i am having is that i cannot install windows 98 because windows XP uses NTFS format and 98 uses FAT32. So can someone shed some light on what i should do either with the error in XP install or if i can do anything with w98. Thanks for any info.

The easiest way would be to reformat the hard drive. That is if losing current data is not an issue.

As for the disc problem, not sure how to help with that one. I rarely experience problems installing from cd-roms, but I have had that error before once or twice. Don't remember what I did to fix it...

Sounds like a bad disk, give gateway a call they should replace the disk for you.
