Problems with "operation timed out"

hi guys, I have a problem I just cant resolve. My gf and I use computers connected to an adsl router through a usb hub. Till recently we have both been keen backgammon players on www.playsite.com suddenly I can no longer access the games rooms* and get the operation timed out error box whenever I try. She can still access and play and I can use my ids on her puter. Since we both connect vias the same router I cant see that it is a firewall issue. It looks to me as if something has changed within my puter. 1) any ideas? 2) could it be because of a Ms update?
3)any ideas??? please help! I am getting withdrawal symptoms lol
* I can access the site and even log in using my id. it is when I try and bring up the gammon rooms that I get the message

Mike

Hi Mike, what OS do you have on your PC and what browser / browser version do you have?

Whatever browser it is, I would make sure you have the latest version of it, and latest version of java (Go to Windows update and look for MS Virtual Machine or go to www.java.com).

Also, delete your temp files, cookies, history and downloaded programs (it's an IE option Tools | Internet Options | General tab | Settings | View objects).

we are using XP pro and IE6.(latest version) I have checked for the latest MSVM updates, all cookies etc are deleted on a regular basis. I think this might be a registry problem connected to ms office(xppro version) as this is the only thing I have reinstalled recently after accidently deleting ms word. I could however be talking out of the smaller orifice LOL as I usually steer well clear of the regedit option.

Try this:

Expand to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\InternetSettings

Create a new or edit the existing, DWORD value "ReceiveTimeout" set it to the number of seconds you want. 1000 is default, I think.

Also, you may want to reinstall IE6 SP1 just in case. Or try creating a new XP account, log on with it and try to connect to your game.

Also, try deleting the files I mentioned in my last post / last suggestion.

James thanks for your help and suggestions, I have tried everything you mentioned and more. I guess this is one of those "glitches" that happen sometimes with no rhyme or reason and that I will just have to forget about playing backgammon on my computer.
Thanks again
Mike

you could try a different browser like opera/mozilla.

I wouldn't give up on this, it's fixable. Try setting the time out to 120,000.

Or, go to Control Panel, Add/remove | Components and remove IE. Reboot, reinstall IE, reboot. Then install IE6 SP1.

Also, install java from java.com to see if that helps.

guys I already have Opera and get the exact same result! Thats why I think that something in the registry has been altered/corrupted. I have tried to make a comparison with the gfs registry but it appears that microsoft office (xp) version opens up a whole new range of registry sub headings and a comparison is virtually impossible.
I have not given up but am getting tired of beating my head against this brick wall. Mind you it feels really good when I stop for a few! lol

Hmmm.. I would do a clean install. Copy your files to your gf's pc and then format and install XP. Then install Office, and try your game.

Pretty drastic just to play backgammon! There is absolutely nothing else affected by this. I guess i will just have to put my fingers on a diet and play on my laptop lol#]
Thanks for all your suggestions. Love the site! I have picked up some really useful stuff.
