Problems installing Onboard Sound drivers

After reinstalling windows XP SP2 on my brothers laptop, it installed "C-Media AC97 Audio Driver" which isn't the onboard sound driver, which is an SiS7012.

So, I had no sound coming out of the laptop

Downloaded the updated drivers and tried to install them using the windows update driver wizard...and it gave me the "There was a problem installing this device - please uninstall and try again"

Which I did about 3 times, and then decide to use the setup.exe file in the file I downloaded.

This time it gave me this message in a pop-up box:

Quote:
UpdateDriverForPlugAndPlayDevices

This name is already in use as either a service name of a service display name.
I have tried this several times and everything else I could think of to install the drivers, and I get this message every time.

So, what is this "service name" that is in use at the same time?

Edit:

Sorry, forgot to say what type of Laptop it is:

Maxdata Eco 3000X, 20 GB HDD, Windows XP SP2, Intel Pentium 4 1.80 Ghz, 224 MB DDR 266 RAM

You might want to completely remove the sound devices from Device Manager and do a reboot. Check in Device Manager to make sure the sound card shows up as an unknown device.
Then install the drivers.

That was one of the things that I tried.

Same thing each and every time

Tried that, and now the Windows XP wizard is giving hte same message as the setup.exe programme from the other audio drivers:

Quote:
An error occured during the instillation of the device.

The name is already in use as either a service name or a service display name
hmm... wonder what this "service" is?

Look in LOCAL MACHINE\SYSTEM for any keys that pertain to your card and remove them. Do this after removing any and all sound drivers from Add / Remove and remove the card from Device Manager with out rebooting.

You're saying that XP's generic drivers are not working?

No, they gave it the wrong ones and it wasn't working - apparently this is a common problem after an install of SP2 with certain onboard audio.

Anyway, I managed to fix it by formatting again, but this time installing the drivers you gave me first before I updated it to SP1 and 2 (as it didn't seem to give any genericdrivers for it)
